Internet trolls are people who deliberately post inflammatory or derogatory comments on social media sites, chat rooms or blogs with the intent to provoke readers and disrupt the topic of conversation. The main issue with internet trolls is that the person/s initiating the offensive comments are anonymous as they can choose any username and no one will know it’s them making the comments. It will inform you about the laws surrounding social media and what could happen if you break those laws. It will also talk about the responsibilities you and other social media users have when using a social media platform. There are no specific laws in the UK that specifically govern Social Media. There are however laws that protect Social Media, such as the Malicious Communications Act of 1988, which people can face up to six months imprisonment or fined up to £5,000 for violating and the Criminal Justice and Police Act of 2001 (Section 43), the fines and punishments for this legislation as the same as the Malicious Communications Act of 1988.
